Italian children start eating out from a young age, and kids are more than welcome at all eateries. Highchairs are often available and it’s perfectly acceptable to order a half-portion (mezzo piatto). On the flipside, children are expected to be well behaved – if they start crawling under the table, you’ll need to bring them into line.

Italian food is all about regional specialities, though there are some staples that bind the nation. Around Naples, simple tomato and mozzarella pizza reigns supreme, while around Bologna it’s all about prosciutto, parmigiano reggiano cheese and fresh pasta such as tagliatelle al ragù (the original spag bol) and lasagne. Sumptuous Ligurian pesto is served with pasta mixed with a few tiny green beans and new potatoes. In the north, butter replaces olive oil, and rice (usually served as risotto) and polenta are often eaten instead of pasta. Sweets, too, are sublime, from the ubiquitous gelato to Sicily’s sweet ricotta cassata.

Pizza al taglio is a great on-the-run snack, as are panini from little grocery stores. Markets everywhere, including Rome’s Campo de Fiori, are bursting with inspiring picnic supplies like salami, cheese, olives, bread and fruit.
