Chapter Five – Eliza

The trek to follow the wolves proved… interesting. With actual land guides showing them the way, they made much faster progress than in the last two days. About four wolves escorted them, two at the front, two behind, and the fifth, Farla, sitting on Pavel’s back with Eliza, asking questions about humans that were both endearing and a little alarming. Her comprehension of words seemed good, but her accent was a little off, and some of the intonation as well. However, just by listening to Eliza talk, the little wolf girl seemed eager to imitate a real human, and soon was copying Eliza’s tone.

“Varok says that humans like to have a special room in their house for peeing and pooping. You don’t like to do it outside, you want to go to this special room and sit on a kind of chair to do this. Is that right?”

“Totally right,” Eliza said, baffled but amused. “We think it’s cleaner that way. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting. Have you been in a human house before?”

“I haven’t,” Farla said in a hushed voice. “I heard they’re so much better than our wolf ones! You have so many things. Varok thinks you have too many things, but maybe I’ll find it interesting. And I do! It’s all so interesting!”

Sure, kid, Eliza thought to herself. It’s all interesting.

The wolves steered them expertly through what previously seemed like inaccessible land, and although the trek took the better part of the new day, to the point where the sun began to dip low in the sky, preparing for dusk to fall, they made it to the base in fantastic time. The land flattened out, and in the distance, they saw the occasional, scattered human house.

“We need to visit some of those houses,” Eliza told Pavel, knowing he understood her in his bear form. “We can get in contact with our team then.”

Pavel let out a kind of grunt in response, which Eliza took to be a yes.

“Varok’s asking if you need to be further escorted,” Farla said. “He is not comfortable going deeper into human territory.”

“We just need to make it to one of the houses,” Eliza said. “Then we should be fine from there.”

Farla, tucked in front of Eliza, seemed to listen intently to one of the wolves, before she smiled. “They’ll watch us from nearby to make sure we are okay. Then they will go.”

They advanced on one of the closer buildings, and Eliza’s heartbeat increased from the sheer excitement of maybe making it off the mountain alive. She also kept thinking about the artifact tucked in her backpack, wondering if the wolves sensed something off about whatever was inside, but they didn’t react, and didn’t seem to care about checking her belongings. Just as well. Eliza had a horrible suspicion she’d need to kill them all to make sure they didn’t speak about the artifact to anyone else.
