Chapter Twenty-Four

It was late. After midnight. Basilio and two other men watched as another stood, peeking out the blinds of a window.

“Carlito. Do you see him?” asked Basilio.

“Not yet.”

“Do you see anything else?” asked another man named Emilio.

Carlito turned to the group. “Luckily, no.” He returned his attention to the street. “Wait! Yes. Here he comes. Emilio. Get the door.”

He did, and another man quickly ducked inside. Emilio closed and locked the door. Then he and the man embraced. “Good to see you, Javiero.”

“Same here, my friend.”

“And you were not followed?”

“I wouldn’t have come to the house if I thought so.”

Miguel, the other man with Basilio, said, “See anything, Carlito?”

Carlito kept his focus on the street. Nothing moved. “I think we are good.” He turned to face the group. “We’re okay.”

“Then let’s get started,” said Miguel.
