Transition of the Household Class Process in United States
The specific overdetermined juncture of the capitalist class process and the noncapitalist patriarchal household process is constituted by its contradictions. In our scheme, the contradictions may be so constituted that the housewife may decide to become a wage laborer in the capitalist economy. FRW pointed out that the United States household has been undergoing a class revolution since the late 1960s, such that the traditional feudal households are giving way to independent or communal forms of households. This transformation was driven to a large extent by the constitutive effects of changing gender perception following the feminist movement. Such household classes are more conducive to allowing the housewife to enter the workforce in the nonhousehold sector. The entry of women in the workforce was also a response to falling real wages occurring since the 1970s, which had a lot to do with the internal and external conditions of change taking place within corporate America. As Richard Wolff argues,
Real wages over the 1980s and 1990s trended downwards. Indeed, the falling wages combined with the labor-saving technical changesâthe âcomputer revolutionâ phase of the classic automation processâto produce many of the boom levels of corporate profitsâ¦.
US families responded to falling real wages by sending more family members out to work for more time. According to the Economic Policy Institutes annual statistical analysis (The State of Working America, 2000â2001), the average US married-couple family with children saw its income rise by 21.3 percent from 1979 to 1988, but if the wifeâs contributions to that income were excluded, the rise would have been only 5.9 per cent.
