When Pascal suggested a journey in his LandCruiser to the northern cape, I was relieved at the distraction.

Preuett had somehow got wind that something was planned. He was in the hotel dining room at breakfast.

‘Howdy. Where are you going today?’

‘Nowhere.’

‘I sherr would like to get out of this town for a day. I was going dahving but I decided against it. You don’t get too many vatu to the dollar and it’s merch too expensive on your own. Are you interested in dahving? We could share the costs. Or maybe we could go to Million Dollar Point.’

Pascal muttered, ‘Who is this son of George Bush? I am going to kill him.’

I said, ‘As a matter of fact, we were thinking of going to Million Dollar Point.’ Pascal scowled, and Preuett’s face lit up.

At Million Dollar Point thousands of tons of matériel had been dumped in the sea by the departing American Army. They had offered the equipment to the settlers at knockdown prices – everything from earthmovers and jeeps to construction materials, mudslats, Quonsetts – but the settlers, figuring the equipment would have to be abandoned anyway, turned the offer down. Piqued, the Americans built a ramp off the beach, throwing into the concrete all the ballast they could find, including live ammunition, and drove everything into the sea.

I said, ‘But we’re in a bit of a mess. Pascal’s LandCruiser has a flat, and the spare’s no good. We were going to rent a jeep but the stupid thing is, neither of us has got any money. Now that you’ve been to the bank, maybe you could –’

‘That’s rilly terf,’ said Preuett quickly. ‘I’d rilly like to help you guys but,’ getting up and opening his wallet (an object neither of us had seen before) to pay for breakfast, he said, ‘I think I may jerst go to the dahve shop and see if I can find someone else to dahve with. Have a good day.’

He was gone. It should have been obvious to us, of course: his wallet had rilly contained merch more money than either of us expected.
