TEN

Viktor Bashkim had been completely silent, brooding and constantly perusing the photographs on Sofia’s mobile phone of Steve Flynn, looking over his shoulder while being pursued from the villa in Cyprus. He had said nothing on the flight out of Cyprus on the private jet owned by the head of the Lyubery mafia who had been providing him with protection for four years.

Sitting across the narrow aisle from him, trying to get some rest on the luxurious, reclining seat, Sofia watched her father with concern.

Finally, Viktor broke his silence. ‘We should have hunted Flynn down anyway, not left him in abeyance. It’s as simple as that. This’ – he flicked his fingers angrily at the photographs on the phone – ‘was always going to happen. He’s resourceful and clever and dangerous, and was always going to discover I was still alive. Both he and that FBI agent should have been hunted down.’

‘But that didn’t happen, Father, and we are where we are.’

The old man nodded, sipped his tea, then said, ‘Once we have completed these … these business negotiations, I want you to see it through: Flynn and Donaldson. Both must die if I am to live out the remainder of my days in peace. And that is what I want, Sofia – peace. After this, I will return to Albania and live out my years in the familiar surroundings of our traditional home. Do you understand, my dear?’

‘Yes, Father.’

He sat back. ‘I trust you to do it and also make your peace with Nico. He is no businessman, completely incapable of running our enterprise, even though he thinks he could. He must be given an important role of some sort to make him feel valued and have no animosity towards you or me. We must appease him.’

‘I understand, Father,’ Sofia agreed, knowing it would be easier said than achieved. Nico’s bitter resentment was deep and unflinching – and who could really blame him? To summon her back from the life she led in the United States, where she had been hidden away for so many years, quietly acquiring knowledge and skills pertaining to business and murder, and then to take on the mantle of family head, had wounded Nico badly, and the truth was Sofia didn’t now trust her brother. She could see the sheen of murder in his eyes every time he looked at her, so she knew she could never be safe while he was prowling around. She guessed that once the negotiations that she and Viktor were attending to were over and they returned to the shelter of Albania, she would have to play a waiting game; somehow keeping Nico, if not happy, then busy, while she bided her time until Viktor passed away, at which point she knew she would have to move quickly and kill Nico before he killed her.

She puffed out her cheeks at the prospect.

It would be a long, drawn-out game of chess.

The flight took over three and a half hours before
