SOFFITS

Traditionally, upper cabinets were 30" (762mm) in height and soffits filled in the space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling (Figure 5-4). Lighting often fits inside the soffits as well. Most upper cabinets are still 30" (762mm) in height, but kitchens have become more open, so the area above the cabinets often is uncovered and crown molding placed around the top of the cabinets (Figure 5-5).

For increased storage, many styles of cabinets now are available with a height of 36" or 42" (914mm or 1,067mm), which goes nearly to the ceiling. Add crown molding to hide any gap between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling. Another option is to add a row of small cabinets or shelving above the upper cabinets, but if you do so, they may have to be special ordered. Keeping the existing soffit, or building a new one, are options as well.
