Would it be too immature to say âAre we there yet?â
I felt like saying it to just pass the time, as I was tired and getting a bit cranky from walking so far. Although we trained a lot in the Dark Forest, having to walk all day toward a destination you just wanted to be at already was nerve-racking. I just wanted this to be over with. I was tired, hungry, and was done with having to worry whether or not anyone was following us.
Honestly, I just wanted to go home.
But what was home for me? Every time I thought about having to go back to normal, I thought back to Davis and Melvin and how we would all get together to explore or just have a meal. I missed the lunches at school we used to have together and all the memories, whether they were all good or not. I thought of them the mostâdid that mean I had accepted Wonderland as my home?
I still cared about everyone in my world, even my two sisters whom I didnât get along with. But here I felt accepted and as if I could do anything. Here I wasâI hate to say itâimportant. At home I was average and always fighting for what I wanted to do. Here, well, I was fighting, but not in the same way. Here I fought for Wonderland, but I could be myself.
Playing with the thought, I wondered if I could set up an art shop here. I could teach people how to paint, sell some of my paintings, and be doing what I wanted to do in my world. Here, though, it seemed achievable, whereas in my world it didnât seem as likely as many things could destroy a business in a blink of an eye, not to mention art school would cost a lot. Here I could find an artist and mentor under them for a while, and travel.
This world had everything I ever wantedâadventures, beauty, a society not centralized by money but by making sure everyone was fed and cared for. As long as there wasnât anyone taking over Wonderland, of course. But even so, I felt like I was betraying everyone I cared for in my world. At the same time, they wouldnât remember me, so they wouldnât have to worry.
I let out a sigh. Malcolm glanced over. âDonât worry, we will reach there by nightfall.â
I laughed. âNot that. Well, kind of. I am tired. But I was just thinking about Wonderland and what will happen when we win.â
âAh.â
He didnât add anything more than that, as the discussion of what I would do after Wonderland was restored was still a problematic one. He had a point. I didnât know what it was like to live forever, or nearly forever. Would this feeling of regret only get worse as time went on? Or would I move past it? There was no way of knowing, but I felt that I would have even more regret if I went back to my world.
