With or without public transportation, Yosemite’s visitation was bound to grow—and did, cresting at four million in 1994. A major flood three years later brought the first reprieve in more than fifty years. Even so, it was a negative reprieve, officials admitted, in that the flooding was hardly planned.

Simply put, yesterday’s future has arrived. Must every park keep its roads? If admittedly a railroad is also development, it at least minimizes so many others. On trains, people limit their footprint rather than widen it. That is what Europe knows.

Once upon a time in Yosemite, there was a railroad to El Portal. In Switzerland, such a railroad still exists. Lauterbrunnen is developed and Yosemite Valley still a wilderness, or so we Americans would like to think. The truth is that both are developed, and Yosemite Valley perhaps more so, considering its lost tranquility. The car is freedom, but it is not tranquility. Only its railroad ever promised Yosemite that.
