Ideal position for holding the lunge line and whip.

To lengthen the rein, just let out a fold at a time. To shorten it, use your right hand to help fold it in. This hand must also keep control of the whip, so it's worth practising.

Your right hand holds the whip, pointing it slightly downwards and towards the horse's quarters. This way you can flick the end gently on the ground to encourage him forward, rolling your wrist slightly so that the whip follows him; or point it towards his girth if he starts to move in on the circle. Do not crack the whip—if the horse doesn't go forward focus on your voice aids and body language. The whip's function is to replace leg aids, not to make a noise or frighten the horse.

Reverse these instructions for the right rein.
