I pulled Burt’s rig parallel to the school parking lot and jumped out with the diesel running. I found Jack standing at the security chain-link outside the attendance office looking all business.

“This lady here has your sign-out sheet ready to go.”

He gave me a thumbs-up then drove off, heading up to East Fork.

I scribbled Audie’s name, and the office lady threw open the gate as Audie came running down the hall.

“Goodness, Tommy,” the woman said, “the fifth graders are just decorating for Halloween, so you if you have a minute . . .”

By then we were pulling out onto the Reno Highway.

“I seen better-run jails,” Audie said.

She looked at me then laughed and grabbed at the cap I was wearing.

“You look like a damn prune picker in that ball cap,” she said. “That’s what Grandpa Dave would say. Where we goin’?”

“Home.”

She handed me a half-finished witch made from black construction paper. When she got serious, I always had to laugh.

“Better-run jails?”
