Of Gods and Treasure

Sun started up the stairs. “This first pyramid is the temple. There’s an entrance at the very top where we can see where they worshiped their gods.” A huge head of a serpent lay on the ground in front of the steps, broken off from its body. “This was in honor of their god.” Sun ran his hand over the stone facade and then walked up the steps.

Frederick stopped to take a picture of the serpent head. Each scale was carefully detailed in the stone. Leslie looked up but couldn’t see that there was an entrance anywhere.

“I’m so glad I’ve been doing the Stairmaster,” Samantha said and started up behind Sun.

“AJ, are you going to need a hand?” Frederick asked her. She was looking up the steps with a wary eye.

“Thanks. I’ll make it.” She started gingerly moving up with Jessup walking not far behind. Miguel was quietly taking up the back.

Leslie tried to get into a rhythm on the steps, but they were too close together and worn. She would get into a quick tempo and then start to trip when the next step wasn’t at the same height. She settled for a slow set of stepping.

When she finally reached the top, she looked back. They were almost at the same height as the treetops.

“This pyramid was built to honor and pray to their god. Only royalty would enter here.” Sun pointed at the entrance, a tall trapezoid opening that gaped blackness. “They would funnel the beliefs of their people, commune and pray to their gods, and then be the gods’ messenger. Everyone will need their flashlights to enter.”

Everyone dug in their bags for flashlights and Leslie pulled out her headlamp. Sun walked through the entrance without a light and Samantha hurried in behind him, shining a light for him.

Leslie waited for everyone and entered last. It wasn’t a cave, but the dark opening made her heart skip a few beats. Leslie spoke to no one in particular. “I’ve heard,” as she walked in, lowering her voice so that it wouldn’t echo so much in the small space, “that these types of buildings can withstand earthquakes?”

Samantha responded, “I’ve been to the ruins at Machu Picchu. That’s what I heard there. They’ve withstood dozens of earthquakes without a stone moving. The stones will shift slightly, but then settle back into their original positions.”

Leslie had been in caves that were a cooler temperature than the outside, but she hadn’t expected the room to be quite so cool. On the floor, a few long, black centipedes ran on the smooth, shining stone surface. Their little red legs were moving fast to escape the light. Leslie checked her boots to ensure none were on her.

Leslie spied a trapezoid shelf carved out of stone. She ran her hands over the stone surface. “Such amazing work to get this stone smooth. And look at the shape. At least with the human eye, it looks like a perfect trapezoid.”

AJ made a soft exclamation as she tripped.
