OF COURSE, this data is almost twenty years old and does not necessarily represent the environmental effects of these particular brand-name products today, but it makes the point that the products we use at home do end up in the environment and have effects.

I find it interesting that laundry detergents were more toxic to fish than paint(! ), even though to humans it is the other way around. But I’m not surprised that household bleach was the most toxic thing they tested, since this is the same hypochlorite used to kill bacteria in our municipal water supplies. Bacteria is bacteria, and chlorine kills bacteria, whether in tap water, a natural waterway, or the intestines of your body.

Throughout this book, I say over and over that the determining factor as to whether or not toxic exposures cause harm to you depends on ( 1 ) the toxicity of the poison, and (2) the ability of your body to excrete the poison. This also applies to the planet. Right now, the amount of toxic poisons we humans release into the environment is greater than the amount the planet can handle.
