Okay, I told myself. This dude is as strong as that gremdaw matriarch. I can do this.

Forcing myself not to panic, I strode forward with my Chasing Hammer held high. The golem moved faster than any pile of huge stones should, and lifting its arms high, brought them down with a smash.

Stone shrapnel blasted me, cutting a deep gash across my cheek. One larger chunk punched me in the chest so hard I knew I’d need to use healing herbs when the fight was done.

Stumbling forward, I put all of my strength into a single attack and sent my hammer sailing at the golem’s head, crying out “Peening Strike!” at the same time.

My Chasing Hammer glowed a bright silver, and the head spun so the small, round ball of the hammer faced the front. In a streaking arc, the hammer flew through the air, crashing into the golem’s flat face. A blast of Spirit scored the air all around me, but something in the skill shielded my face and body.

If not, I might have been seriously injured by the tiny fragments of the golem’s face.

When the cloud cleared, however, the monster was most certainly alive and well. I backed away, well aware that I was outnumbered and now slightly injured.

How the hell did it withstand my skill attack? I only have so many Spell Shards! What am I supposed to do?

Desperate, I retreated, my mind spinning to try to find an alternative solution. Then a memory returned to me.

Anya, shortly after saving my life, had given me Runic Vision. So far, I’d used it primarily in Runecrafting. But she’d told me that if I was clever, I could figure out how to use it in more ways than one.

Without further hesitation, I activated Runic Vision.

Immediately, light burst out from hundreds of runes scattered across the room, climbing up the tall walls and coming from the golems themselves.

I inspected the one before me. Its head had several runes glowing brightly. The one on its face, still glowing stubbornly, was the rune of Endurance. I’d just struck the monster in a resilient place.

The golem had reached me by then and wound up for another double-handed attack. This time, I managed to roll free of the scattering debris.

Rising to my feet, I saw an empty rune socket on the side of its head.

I took the risk and dashed in. Calling upon Peening Strike once more, I watched as my hammer lashed out, connecting precisely with the empty rune socket. Cracks spread out from the impact site, glowing Spirit leaking through.

Then, in a cloud of Spirit, the first of the golems broke apart.

It wasn’t time to celebrate, not by a long shot.

My Spirit Reserve had just dropped by 50 points, and there were a great many more golems around me.

I looked up to see the others rolling closer. Several had glowing beads of light steadily building on the ends of their blunt arms. They were preparing to cast spells.
