Pinto didn’t know how long he sat and stared blankly at the table in front of him; his mind wouldn’t stop conjuring up images, each one worse than the last. At the very least he should warn Neath, Pinto pushed himself up, grateful to finally have some action he could take. Despite what had happened Neath didn’t deserve to be blind-sided by Fuu’s intervention. In fact, Pinto felt a little bit of hope re-kindling, perhaps the threat of Fuu taking action might give Neath the impetus he needed to push back against the council’s demands himself. By the time he reached the platforms he was no longer in a panic, if anything he’d started to convince himself that far from being a disaster the situation might turn out to be for the best. He waved to catch Neath’s attention, nodding for them to move away a little to talk in private.

‘So is she using you as her messenger boy now?’

‘Huh?’ Pinto was taken aback by Neath’s brusque tone.

‘Your wife,’ Neath responded sarcastically. ‘Has she sent you to issue more ultimatums?’

‘Ultimatums?’ Pinto blinked in confusion. Had Fuu decided to hold-off on confronting the council herself and given Neath on last chance to do it instead?

‘She hasn’t told you has she,’ Neath slowly unfolded his arms as he eyed Pinto critically. ‘She found out I was sending squads on the routes she vetoed,’ Pinto grimaced on Neath’s behalf, he thought Neath had seemed to be in too bad a mood for it to just be her reaction to the delivery of daggers. ‘She said that since I wouldn’t send them in without her shields then she was effectively enabling my,’ Neath paused, Pinto already cringing as he expected a direct Fuu quote was coming, ‘“reckless stupidity” I think she called it,’ Neath continued as Pinto groaned. ‘So she said that unless I stopped she wouldn’t supply any more shields. Oh, or charge any existing items.’

‘Hold on,’ Pinto found his mouth was suddenly dry. Fuu charging off to tell the council she thought they were wrong was bad enough, but if she was intending to blackmail them by holding the supply squads hostage… ‘You mean she threatened to stop providing shields unless you did what she wanted?’

‘Yep. What’s wrong?’ Neath frowned as Pinto felt the blood drain from his face. He was going to be sick. ‘Hey!’ Neath grabbed his shoulder and shook him, annoyance instantly replaced by concern. ‘What’s happened?’

‘Fuu’s gone to confront the council,’ Pinto spoke slowly, ‘she said she was going to help them understand…’ he trailed off as he saw Neath’s eyes widen.

‘Shit!’ Neath cursed loudly, then instantly looked round to see if anyone had heard. ‘Hold on,’ he tightened his grip as Pinto went to dash for the exit. ‘Where do you think you’re going?’

’To stop her!’ Pinto whirled in a blind panic. ‘If she threatens Krychek…’

‘Just think!’ Neath shook him harshly. ‘Does she even know who the council are?’ Pinto stared at him blankly.

‘Only my parents,’ he admitted slowly.
