CHAPTER 21

WHAT IN TARNATION

JARGU ROAD

The dry kindling crackled in the fire pit from the spreading flames. I blew on the small pile below the teepee of fallen branches to encourage the orange and red growth. The intense storm from earlier knocked down a plethora of firewood that I collected while I waited for the rest of my team to join me. The recently dried out logs popped and snapped as the fire grew.

This was day two of camping alone on the side of the road between Jargu and Masium. I relished in the peace and quiet, enjoying becoming one with the environment. As the kindling succumbed to the fire, I reflected on the last two days.

Before I left, I decided to visit the station, write everyone that mattered in notes to those who needed them, and leave the city quietly. Once I was in the wide-open expanse, I sighed in relief.

A brewing pressure from the local politics definitely pulled on me. Apparently, my description ended up getting skewed by the rumors passing. The city became alive with the prospect of a champion in their midst. A champion who would expand the walls, defeat the cyclops, build a museum, give the poor their due riches, and the lofty insinuations never slowed.

It definitely gave me a lot more concern than hope. While I hastily departed Massy, dozens of people demanded my attention, figuring out who I was. Some of them were lovely young ladies sent by their parents while most of them were people wanting assurances from the Konway Expedition. I avoided them all besides to say there were two quests officially on the system trade postings and to visit Hexen to collect.

The guards let me pass without an issue since I headed out instead of in. I rode a few hours outside the gates until I found a nice spot and camped on the road so no one could miss me.

The snakes, which I named Adam and Steve, guarded me while I slept. They always knew when I woke somehow so they could check in. Well, as I rebuilt the fire that died from my slumber, Steve slithered out of the light brush beside the road. I could tell the difference mostly by their snout length but also by their demeanor.

Steve hissed with a coil, ready to strike something in the woods. My eyes darted into the bushes, instantly going into a combat mindset. I lunged for my staff, snatching it out of my tent in a flash. When I bought the staff, I also acquired a new set of leathers for light armor. It wasn’t thick enough to stop arrows or stabs from a powerful strike, but it was decent against cuts and glancing blows. Then again even modern armor on Earth was meant to do that, well and to slow a high speed projectile enough that it might not result in a fatal wound.

I stalked towards the brush until I stood above Steve’s orange body. The snake’s snout continued to point into the gloomy forest.
