Walker (2001) goes on to argue that many of the zoos in India are problematic in terms of overcrowding, both of animals and of people, and argues for the need for zoos in India to be privatised so that they might be run better, with less bureaucracy and with greater investment. Moreover, she further argues that India’s zoos have so far failed to develop a single scientific breeding programme and have also failed to live up to their educational and conservational potential. She concludes that ‘[p]erhaps Indian zoos should just concentrate on educating their public to protect its remaining habitat’ (Walker, 2001: 290). We can see that these problems are still current by looking at the case of Mumbai’s zoo (Box 5.2).

Zoos have been rather under-recognised as a potential tourism resource in India (Hannam, 2011). In his seminal paper on tourism and zoos, Peter Mason (2000) argued that zoos are a form of living museum (see also Chapter 4). He
