I looked up into her eyes, which brimmed with curiosity. “What did you write?” she asked.

“Thauma,” I whispered, gazing at her. “It means ‘thing of wonder.’ The ancient Greeks used it to describe something unique. Like you are to me.”

Gemma looked down, probably to hide the blush on her cheeks that was returning at regular intervals. She stretched her hand out toward mine and began to draw imaginary lines on my palm. Unable to hold back my desire any longer, overcome by a passion more intense than I’d ever known, I grasped her fingers in mine, wanting never to let her go. I forced myself to breathe deeply, hoping to drive away the emotion that had clouded my mind.

“I haven’t finished telling you about the stars,” I said, trying to regain control.

She shook her head slightly and looked at me with curiosity .

“See that star up there?” I asked, pointing.

“Which one?”

I leaned in toward her, my cheek almost touching hers. “The brightest one,” I said, pausing to look at her as she scanned the sky. I brushed back the locks of hair that cascaded over her shoulder, revealing her delicate skin. She continued to stare upward as my breath drew invisible symbols on her neck.

“I see it now. That’s the morning star,” she whispered uncertainly.

I shook my head slowly.

“Oh, I thought it was. What’s it called?”

“Its name is Gemma,” I whispered in her ear, “because it lights up the night all on its own. Just like you. Can’t you see? It’s shining brighter than all the others, Jamie.” I ran the tip of my nose along her skin and she trembled. “It’s your star now,” I said in a hushed voice.

The star must have heard my whisper; it began to shine more brightly in the sky.

“Nobody can own a star.”

“But you can connect it indissolubly to the memory of someone. That way, deep down in your heart, a part of the star becomes yours forever. Every time you feel alone, no matter where you are, every time you miss me, look for it in the sky. It will help you remember me,” I whispered, holding back the emotions that threatened to overwhelm me. In the place where she would go, there was a spot where she’d be able to see it whenever she wanted to think of me.

“Memories are for people who aren’t together any more. What are you trying to tell me, Evan? I don’t want memories. I want you.”

For a moment I almost suspected she’d guessed the destiny that would soon separate us. “All things considered, I’m happy,” I said, dodging her question. I didn’t want to lie to her.

“You don’t look the least bit happy.” She was repressing the anguish she’d felt when I said that, but I sensed it all the same.

“Gemma, I can’t regret the destiny in store for me. Can anyone blame the spark that lights a candle, even though it means condemning it to slowly burn up? For a little while, the candle sees the light.
