Casey was back in Sedona by early evening. Her flight from Los Angeles International had arrived back in Phoenix just in time to catch the shuttle. She knew that Josh would be pissed that she hadn’t stopped off to see him, but she was driven by a sense of urgency.

She called Gabe’s motel from the airport and was lucky enough to catch him in the room. She told him to meet her as soon as he could make it.

CHAPTER 14

The Sedona Airport was located on a mesa, named aptly enough Airport Mesa. On the way back down the hill, on Airport Road, was an overlook, a parking area with a spectacular view on the spread of Sedona below. That was where Casey had told Gabe to meet her.

She retrieved her rental car from the airport parking lot where she’d left it and drove to the overlook. She was relieved to see that it was empty of cars. She knew that it was a popular spot for lovers to park, but it was probably too early for lovers.

Gabe arrived fifteen minutes later. He parked nearby and crossed over to her car, peering in. She leaned over to open the passenger door. He slid in, looking at her closely before closing the door.

“It’s great to have you back. I was worried about you out there in La La Land. How did it seem to you?”

Casey smiled. “A bit like a foreign country. I guess I’ve been away from it for too long to take it for granted.”

“Well, at least it didn’t shake while you were there.” He looked out the window.

“I hear that this is a favourite spot for lovers.” He looked over at her. “You know, it would be a perfect cover for us to pretend to be lovers. And I might add, most pleasant.”

“Let’s not get too involved in role-playing here, Mr Stinton,” she warned.

“Maybe it wouldn’t be role-playing, at least not on my part.”

“Whoa, Gabe.” She held up a hand. “Didn’t I tell you? I have a friend in Phoenix. He’s a big sucker, and jealous as hell.” She grinned impishly.

“You can’t blame a man for trying, can you?” he said with his shy smile.

“All right,” she said briskly. “What’s happened since I talked to you earlier?”

“Nothing much has changed, that I know about.”

“Vernon Bornfield is still under arrest?”

“As far as I know. They have him in jail in Prescott.”

“Their investigation isn’t stopping there?”

“Oh, no. As I told you, the lieutenant isn’t completely satisfied that Bornfield is the perp.”

“I’m not, either. In fact, I’d bet on it.” She dropped into thought for a moment. “About this individual who was seen leaving the motel with Leo Thornesburg, is there any kind of physical description?”

“Some, but nothing very helpful. The woman who saw him was maybe fifty yards away, across the swimming pool from Thornesburg’s room, and just happened to be looking out her window when she saw Thornesburg leaving with this other man. It was twilight, and the stranger had his back to her, so she never got a look at his face.
