14 | The Bond That Connects Us

Saturday had me unable to sit still as I waited for Joy to get here with his bike. I hadn’t told him much on the phone, just ordered him to come over with his bike. He’d been understandably confused, but he’d promised me he’d be here, just like I’d expected him to. I wondered if he’d believe my claims. I wondered what he’d say when I told him I would be living a long, healthy life like him.

“You’re really eager for this, aren’t you?’ Raphael asked from where he leaned against the back of my couch, watching me as I peeked out the window to check if Joy was here yet.

“Yeah. It’s just another thing that made me different, you know? My doctor told my parents that I shouldn’t do anything that would make me strain myself so my parents just decided to treat me like a china doll. I don’t fault them for it, obviously, but there are a lot of things I never got to do because of it.” Like learning to ride a bike, going hiking, riding a roller coaster…gods, the list was endless. So many missed outings with friends, summer camps…I’d missed out on a lot when I was a kid.

Raphael walked over to me, a pensive look on his face that had my brows furrowing as he took my hands in his. “What’s wrong?” The question popped out of my mouth unbidden and I waited for him to answer. Raphael looked the best with a wide smile brightening up his face.

“Nothing is wrong. I just wanted to say that if you get tired or are in pain, I’ll definitely help you. But…well, if you fall down and get hurt, my magic would be useless.” The shame in his voice had me straightening up, anger flowing through me at the thought of all the people who had made him feel like that over the years. He’d told me his true age—and I was still having a little trouble processing that—and I couldn’t imagine living that long with people telling you you’re useless and not believing it. But Raph was so far from useless and I needed him to see that. I didn’t know if it was the mate bond talking or that was just how strongly I felt about this, but suddenly I needed Raph to see how good and perfect he was. How much he meant to me.

I pulled my hands away from his and took his face between my palms, tilting my head up so I was looking right into his green-brown eyes. “Listen to me, Raph. You are not useless. Fuck all those people who made you think so, it was their loss that they didn’t figure out just how amazing you are. Their loss and my gain, alright? You are beautiful and amazing and I’m not even talking about your magic when I tell you that you are the most important thing in my life now.
