Jamie spoke to Nick a few times in the hall that week at school, and she met the tall Mi’kmaw boy Julian had called “the Chief.” His name was Daniel Syliboy, and he and Nick had grown up together. Dan lived up the road from Tamarack with his father, a doctor who worked in River Bend, and his grandmother, who made baskets and sold them, along with herbs and vegetables, at the farmers’ markets in Halifax and Dartmouth. Jamie liked Dan. He was quiet, like her, but friendly, like Nick. He reminded Jamie of one of her cousins in Mabou and she began to look forward to running into the two boys.

Naomi seemed to be avoiding Jamie, though. She still said hi when their paths crossed, but she was always with friends and never stopped to talk. The one time Jamie saw her alone after school, she tried to start a conversation but Naomi said she was late for soccer practice and had to go. And when Jamie found her riding Cloudy in a small ring at Tamarack that week, Naomi only waved and kept trotting in circles and figure eights until Jamie gave up and went to find Peach.

After Jamie finished grooming the mare, she looked for Naomi again, but Jane and her little chestnut were alone in the ring. Jane said Naomi and Cloudy had gone for a hack to Tamarack Bog with Serena and Cricket, and wouldn’t be back for a while.

“Oh,” said Jamie. “You mean like a trail ride?”

“Yes…” Jane paused, raising her eyebrows, “but we’re equestrians here at Tamarack. Not cowboys.” She trotted away.

Discouraged, Jamie slowly pedalled home. How can I find out what’s going on if Naomi won’t talk to me? she thought. Is it really about Nick? He acted like Naomi was just a friend, but then he pretty much acted that way with Jamie too. Paul flirted with Naomi, but she didn’t seem to care. Paul flirted with Jamie too but she didn’t think he meant it. After all, he was in Grade 12. It was kind of confusing. Jamie swerved onto her street. Can’t we all just be friends and hang out together with the horses? she wondered.
