From the warm spot inside Breeze’s grasp, London held her breath. So close to his heart, she embraced the surreal exhilaration of traveling from point A to point B in less time than it took to blink. Maybe it was his palpable confidence and daring that quieted her fear of the unknown. Though likely he’d never thought of it, he embodied the concept of faith. He decided to teleport and he did.

They landed with a jolt, and the solid feel of rock under her feet assured her they at least hadn’t dropped into thin air. All around them tunnels looked as though they’d been blasted out of the solid rock. The air was damp and earthy and electric lights lit the dark. From one tunnel she heard footsteps approach and voices.

“Let’s go,” Breeze said, and grabbed her hand.

They ran until they found an unlocked door and slipped inside. The room looked like a utility room with pipes and air ducting traversing the walls and ceilings.

They hid behind a large furnace and she listened to the voices.

“You know I’ll do whatever you want me to do, Max, but I think we should attack the Guardians again before they have too much time to regroup. It’s been only hours. Their numbers are down. I can sense their fear and frustration. I’m sure I can find their base.”

“I don’t care about the Guardians or your grudge against one of them. So he got the best of you? We’ll deal with them all later. The only reason we attacked them was to get the young were-jag. We’re very close to fulfilling the prophecy, so don’t get confused about what I want from you. I want the sister.”

London knew that voice and that it belonged to Max Wentworth. Her heart raced. The other voice belonged to the Oni. A menacing rumble rolled naturally low in her chest. Anger fueled a drive to shift into her jaguar self and tackle them both. She wanted to roar in their faces and brandish her long claws until the two gave away Lincoln’s location.

“Wait,” the Oni said. “Did you hear something? I think I heard something coming from inside this room.”

The doorknob twisted.

“Don’t move,” Breeze said.

“I didn’t hear anything,” Max said. “Look at me. I’m losing my patience with your distractions. Focus on helping me fulfill the prophecy. Find me the other white jaguar.”

She looked up into Breeze’s eyes glistening in the darkness. He motioned to follow him and silently moved toward the farthest wall in the expansive space.

“Are you so unhappy in your true form?” the Oni asked.

Max spat. “I cannot wait to be rid of the stinking animal that robs me of all opportunity. It has ruined my life. I want to be healed. I want immortality. That is when you and I will rule.”

Footsteps sounded down the hallway. “Max, Max! There is a problem with the white were-tiger.”

“What is it now, Tarsus?” Max snapped.

“He is getting too weak to stand,” Tarsus said.

Sounds of the men’s footsteps trailed away.
