Processes and Functions

Many prominent companies such as Hewlett Packard (Dimancescu et al 1996) have adopted permanent lateral structures to maintain the value added of these conversion process by aligning the administrative departments in such a way that all departments act as a single unit with the ultimate objectives of the business in mind. Indeed, other companies such as Xerox have identified four core customer-oriented processes which include permanent cross-functional management teams:

market to collection (from design drawings to customer delivery);

order fulfilment (from customer order placement to order delivery);

integrated supply chain (the alignment of suppliers in the process management approach);

customer service.

Cross-functional management is therefore a process which manages the business in an end-to-end fashion and increases the internal communication between departments. It focuses the actions of each department on maintaining as well as improving the level of performance achieved in these key processes for the benefit of the entire business.
