In the light of day, the destruction at Beryl Gems was only more evident… and more frustrating. Harry Sampson stood in the center of the gated community, a gently sloping hillock ringed by a circular paved cul-de-sac, his hands pressed to his hips, eyes focused on the iron gate at the entrance. Several men were huddled around it, mounting hinges, trying to work the doors back into place. They were struggling with mounting them without the benefit of power tools or other advanced equipment, but they worked together to put everything into place.

Harry looked out along the top of the fence, seeing a few scattered guards who had perched in place up on a few of the castle-like parapets, keeping watch, just in the event that anyone considered a frontal assault. He didn’t figure the full might of the Marines would return quite so soon, but he didn’t want to take any chances either. As he watched, one of the guards moved, snapping his head up and around, glaring out into the daylight.

“Heads up!” he shouted, and Harry’s heart locked in his chest. Something was coming. The guard turned toward them. “Our vans are coming back, but there are some motorcycles coming with them!”

Harry glowered at him, confused.

“Weird motorcycles,” the man on the wall continued. “Some kind of reinforced armor plate on them!”

“Security!” Harry shouted, turning toward the loosely grouped men roaming on the grass nearby. “Up by the entrance gate! Possible hostiles!”

As they moved toward the gate, one of the vans eased its way toward the metal bars and coasted to a stop, brakes squealing lightly as it did. A familiar face leaned out of the passenger seat and cocked a hand toward Harry.

“It’s all good!” he screamed. “The bikes are with us!”

At the entry, the men working to mount the gates turned and looked at Harry questioningly as security continued to fan out around them, spreading into a wide arc, weapons lifted and pointed toward the entrance.

“What do we do, boss?” one of the workers asked. On the other side of the entrance gate, the vans idled, engines throttling in a regular heartbeat-like rhythm. The passenger of the van was still leaning out of the window, still looking in Harry’s direction, a pleading expression on his face, both palms outstretched.

Harry grumbled quietly to himself as he stepped down from the gentle, arcing grass knoll, walking over the pavement, toward the entrance gate. Lance crossed over the lawn as well, meeting Harry out of the corner of his eye.

“What do you think, Lance?”

Just outside the gate the passenger door opened and the man jumped out, immediately walking toward the entrance.

Guards converged, lifting their weapons as the motorcycle engines slowly eased into silence.

“Might be worth seeing what’s going on. There’s what, five of them? We’ve got them outnumbered ten to one, I don’t see the harm.”

Harry nodded, then turned back toward the gate.

“Let them in!” he barked, then looked at the hovering security. “Fan out, but keep your weapons on them.
