It had taken forever to get to this very moment. Maddie could hardly believe they had gotten there. She glanced around the new venue, a convention hall at Jamie’s boyfriend’s office. They’d decided to go with a pastel color scheme to celebrate Spring. An archway made of flowers, donated by one of Maddie’s followers who worked events at the Garfield Park Conservatory, adorned the entrance transporting guests into a Spring wonderland. Centerpieces of paper flowers held down the egg-shell white tablecloths that decorated each table. Thanks to the dozens of paper lanterns that lit up the space, the room was filled with a soft glow. Maddie and the other volunteers had set up a photo booth in the back of the room where guests could pose with props and have the photos air-dropped to their phones. It was a perfect size, even offering an extra room where guests could chill and chat with their partners for the evening. Maddie looked over at Lourdes, and Lourdes offered her a gracious smile.

“You look radiant tonight,” Lourdes said, a slight shimmer coming from her lip gloss. Maddie wore a fitted lavender suit. The suit jacket was low-cut, so she wore a sheer crop top beneath it. She gathered her hair in a sleek ponytail at the nape of her neck. A thin gold chain glimmered around her neck. Though she rarely wore heels, she found a comfortable pair of nude wedges online. Now she and Lourdes could look each other in the eye.

“Me?” Maddie asked, her eyes unable to stay away from Lourdes’ slight cleavage. The diamonds sparkled just shy of her breasts. Lourdes looked equally dazzling in a slinky aubergine silk cocktail dress. Her hair flowed effortlessly down her back.

Maddie lifted her gaze to meet a beautiful grin. “You always look gorgeous, but tonight you defied all odds. I still can’t believe we match.”

Neither Maddie nor Lourdes had consulted the other about their outfit before showing up to the hall.

Lourdes laughed, “A classic case of lesbian telepathy.”

Maddie laughed along with her and sipped her champagne just before Lourdes leaned in and pressed her lips against Maddie’s. She tasted like champagne.

“I couldn’t disappoint when you put so much love and effort into this evening.”

Maddie braced herself, anticipating that Lourdes would say something about her stress levels. She let out a soft breath, relieved that for the night, at least, Lourdes would keep worrying to a minimum. Perhaps it was because of the night they had shared just eighteen hours earlier. Maybe Lourdes finally understood that what she saw as stress was merely Maddie giving it all and that Maddie could handle more than anyone gave her credit for.

Maddie opened her mouth when she spotted Eric and James closing in on their table. They wore pastel blue suits that looked straight out of the seventies. Eric had gelled his hair back. James stood by his side, gorgeous as ever, the blue in his eyes brought out by the powder blue fabric of the suit. His dark, curly hair brushed his shoulders.
