Chapter Fourteen

Murray pushed Tyler back onto her bed, pleased that he fell so easily against her comparatively limited physical power.

She didn’t know if it was the late hour or Tyler’s sweet words and fumbling explanations or the knowledge that she had the ability to bring Tyler Valentine to her doorstep in the middle of the night to apologize for his crappy behavior—all of it, probably—but for once she didn’t feel shy around him, or hesitant.

She felt like she wanted him, and she was going to take him. Why shouldn’t she have something that felt good, for once?

“Is this...” Tyler sounded breathless as she stretched out on top of him. “Is this a good tackle or are you planning to smother me with a pillow?”

“Hmm...” She pretended to be thinking. “I’m pretty sure it’s good, but just keep in mind that I could smother you, if I wanted.”

“Murray...”

He grasped her forearms with his hands and rolled her over like she weighed nothing. Darn athletes. She lay on her back while he braced himself on one elbow, looking down at her.

“Yeah?” Now she was the breathless one.

“Not that I don’t love being under you, or you being under me...” The words alone ignited a flicker of heat low in her belly. “But... Does this mean you do want to be together? Somehow? I know I kind of barged in here, and I know you’re still mad, and I really did hear all of your reasons why you don’t have the room for a relationship in your life, but—”

“Tyler.” She put her hand over his mouth, and his eyes widened. “Shut up. Yes. I mean, I don’t know how this is going to work, like, at all. But yes.” She lowered her hand. “Yes, Tyler Valentine, I would like to be together, somehow.”

A grin spread across his face like sun after a rainstorm, and Murray could admit she was a little dazzled. She never could have imagined that it would be like this with Tyler: all of the zing and thrill of being with her famous hockey crush, while feeling nearly as comfortable with him as she did with one of her friends. Because he was her friend—and still her famous hockey crush.

“Cool,” he said, and she laughed.

“I’m glad you think so.”

The fingers of his free hand rose to her face, tracing her cheekbone and down her jaw. The gentle touch melted her heart and set her insides burning.

“We’ll figure it out,” he said. “I promise.”

Murray wasn’t so sure it would be that easy. Nothing had changed, really. Both she and Tyler had a lot riding on their respective professional performances this fall. The distraction of a relationship could be a huge disaster for both of them.

But he sounded so sure, so confident. And she had the worrisome suspicion that she’d be willing to risk disaster to be with Tyler—and that it might be worth it.
