Chapter 21

Once Scarlett reached the safety of the cabin, Chris braced his hands on his knees and pulled in gulps of air. A twig snapped behind him. He wheeled around, ready to fight. A young buck emerged from the trees. He let out a long sigh of relief. What if the creature had been the two-legged, gun-carrying sort? He cursed himself inside and out, and tacked on more because he deserved it. His actions were leading them down a selfish path fraught with emotional land mines and very real danger.

“Yeah, I know I’m an asshole. Wait until a cute doe comes around and see how you act.”

Dammit, he was a Navy SEAL. He prided himself on his control. Apparently, all it took was one hug from Scarlett, and he regressed to the weak teenager he’d been during Plebe Summer at the Academy. What if he’d executed his plan to get her naked and lose himself inside of her? Would one round of sex be enough? Not a chance. He needed to cease his desired course of action before she got hurt. Any harm to one hair on her beautiful head, from the enemy or from him, was unacceptable.

But Christ, I was right.

He stomped over to the chopping block and placed a thick log in the center.

There is a sultry woman buried beneath the genius.

He picked up the ax. He shifted one hand to the base, the other to the neck, and studied the head.

Why do I have to be obsessed with meeting all the sides of Scarlett?

With straight arms, he swung the ax into the air and rose on his toes. A primordial grunt tore from his lungs as the ax carved through the night on his downswing. The solid log cracked in two with a sharp thwack. Each piece fell to the ground on either side of the block.

He threw the ax into the pine trees and crouched to pick up the sections of the halved log. With his body burning from exertion, he stayed in that position until his legs cramped. Embracing the discomfort was easier than addressing the raw ache in his heart. Scarlett would figure out what to do with the dormant sides of herself coming to life. Another man would have the pleasure of discovering the enticing, confident woman gradually emerging.

He wanted to be that man.

Raising his flesh-and-blood hand to his nose, he inhaled. God, he could still smell her. He yearned to barge into the cabin, strip her naked and revisit the spot—this time with his mouth—he’d learned made her scream. To discover what made her moan softly in pleasure and what made her beg. To thrust his cock inside her and push her so far out of her comfort zone she’d never want to go back. And in between exploring every inch of her body with his lips and hands, he wanted to know every thought inside her beautiful, brilliant head.

He wanted to know it all.

Wanted her to be his home, but he wouldn’t, couldn’t set himself up for more disappointment.
