I didn’t tell Detective Garrison I’d overheard his conversation. Instead, I stored the information away to address later.

Although I did wonder if Garrison knew I’d overheard something. His leery expression indicated that might be the case.

I didn’t ask. It was better if I didn’t know—probably the same for him.

Instead, I started walking back to the college when I heard a footfall behind me.

I glanced over my shoulder, but I didn’t see anyone in particular—only throngs of people from a local jazz festival taking place down at the waterfront. They must have bled over to this area on a break between acts or something.

But I didn’t see anyone who looked especially suspicious.

I took several more steps. Matching footsteps continued to sound behind me.

When I glanced over my shoulder, I again saw no one.

But I was nearly certain that I was being followed.

My heart thumped harder.

I remembered what Weston had said last night—that the closer I got to finding answers, the more someone might feel pressured to stop me from looking.

Was that what was happening right now?
