Mylon Medical Center was unusually quiet that day. For someone who had been practicing medicine for as long as Dr. Morris, the silence was comforting. She replayed the text message from Tom telling her that the three of them were making their way back home as she took a stroll down the hallway to check up on the nurses that were on duty that day. Every one of them greeted her with a smile.

“Chocolates?” one of the younger nurses offered something shiny in front of Dr. Morris.

“You read me mind little lady, give it here,” she fished one of them out of the shiny box. “What on earth is this? You sure these things are meant to be eaten? Feels like I should put them in a jewelry box!”

“They’re so expensive!” The young nurse giggled at the ridiculousness of the presentation, “My boyfriend Leroy just dropped them off this morning.” She was obviously very appreciative of the gesture.

“Hey speaking of boyfriend, have you noticed that burly paramedic who’s been coming around here a lot?” An older nurse confirmed her sighting of the strange man.

“The one who’s been looking for Harry for the past few days?” Another nurse chimed in excitedly.

“I think the guy is into him... a lot!” The young nurse holding the chocolates laughed a little too enthusiastically. “Oh God, there he is again!”

They quickly dispersed like a herd of frightened gazelles.

The good doctor’s maternal instinct was on full steam once she studied the strapping male figure in marine blue uniform. He looked a few years older than Harry, stood almost as tall as Richard, had some old scars on the visible parts of his arms, no visible tattoos, no piercings, a good set of teeth and a clean shaven face.

“Hey Rosa, I know I was just here two days ago, but I really need to talk to Harry. Is he at work today?”

“I’m sorry Mr. Stapleton. Nurse Lincoln is still away on leave. If you want to leave a message with me I’d be happy to pass it along when he comes back.” The nurse tried her best to be as helpful.

“Can you please just give me his phone number?”

“I’m sorry but I’m not allowed to divulge that information.” She politely declined.

Dr. Morris had observed the young man long enough. Paramedic Stapleton took a few fearful steps back when he saw her coming his way.

“I hear you’ve been coming around here a lot, looking for one of my nurses. Mind telling me what for?” The doctor’s expression was unyielding, her eyes wide open. She also stood a few inches over the paramedic, thanks partly to her heels.

The paramedic nearly swallowed his own tongue. “I, I, I… nurse Lincoln told me to come back to change my dressing in three days... five days ago.”

“I can handle that for you!” the doctor ordered him into an exam room next to the counter.

The doctor relished at the opportunity to work on something so simplistic after years of sawing through bones and cutting open people.
