PART II

GOD’S MISSION AND THE MISSION OF HIS PEOPLE

This section explores important biblical and theological themes. The goal is to present a biblical foundation for Southern Baptist cooperative efforts. The previous section portrayed the SBC cooperation through historical lenses. This section views it through biblical lenses. It is important to recognize that, as far as I can determine, the arguments made in this section were not used by early Southern Baptists in the development and support of the Cooperative Program or SBC cooperative structure. I am seeking to show today’s Southern Baptists, young and old, why our denominational cooperative efforts are not only practically beneficial, but also biblical. I hope this section will be an encouragement as Southern Baptists engage in God’s mission in our changing times. Finally, this section will challenge those who are considering walking away from the convention to consider their decisions through the lenses of Scripture.

John Stott once famously said, “Our God is a missionary God.” Though Stott was not a Baptist, the truth behind this statement is the driving force behind Southern Baptist efforts. The mission of our God is his loving pursuit of fallen humanity. It is accomplished through Christ and proclaimed by his church. Every local church exists by God’s mission and for God’s mission. The flow of this section can be summarized with a series of simple statements:

Our one God has a mission in this world.

The mission of God establishes a redeemed people, the church.

The church is a universal body made up of local expressions, each of which is autonomous and responsible to fulfill his mission.

Local churches are commissioned into God’s mission as part of the global body of Christ. This missionary work is best accomplished in partnership with the global church. Cooperation between local churches is the natural and anticipated means for accomplishing this mission.
