When to Keep Them Off Nursery
It can be a tricky call to know whether or not to keep your toddler away from pre-school. In the first instance, of course, you should take the advice of your GP who will let you know best practice. Your childcare provider will also have rules about returning or attending while suffering from certain illnesses, so make sure you have a copy of their sickness policy.
âMy feeling is, if theyâre well enough to run about, and not ill with something contagious and evil (measles, for example), they can go in,â suggests one mum. Another agrees: âI only keep my kids off pre-school if they are actually âunwellâ â for example, with a temperature and not themselves, or if they have something contagious.â
If your toddler is particularly clingy and not his usual self, âhe wonât like being at nursery when heâs ill,â says one Mumsnetter. âNor is it fair on the staff or the other children. Keep him at home.â If he has a temperature or is off-colour, bear in mind that he might flag during the day. If you do decide to let him attend pre-school or nursery, make sure that the staff are informed of the situation, and stand by the phone ready for action if he takes a turn for the worse.
If you are lucky enough not to have work or other commitments, then you can probably be a little over-cautious and keep your toddler at home if they are under the weather. After all, as one kind mother points, âMine always wants his mum when heâs feeling grotty.â
