They spent the next twenty-four hours doing exactly that. They made sure Benson was fed, clean, cuddled, and happy, and they spent all day Sunday on the couches with blankets watching stupid reality shows. They hadn’t shared a bed again, even though Toby had wanted to.

“I’ll just have to suffer alone,” Toby had joked at his bedroom door on the Saturday night. “No cuddle buddy. It almost made food poisoning worth it.”

He’d thrown out the bait, but Gideon, although he looked somewhat stunned, didn’t bite.

“Just kidding,” Toby had added, trying to play it off. He’d meant it as a joke, but not really. “Nothing is worth food poisoning. Good night.”

He’d closed the door and stopped just short of banging his head on it.

Stupid thing to say, Toby.

On Sunday night, after Benson was bathed, fed, and in his bed, Gideon and Toby were on the couch watching their baking show and sipping on black tea. They had managed to keep down some toast during the day, but neither of them wanted to risk more than tea, more Lucozade, and some saltine crackers.

They were on the same couch, at either ends, though sharing a blanket. Not that it was cold, it was more of a comfort thing.

“I’m so wiped,” Toby admitted. “We’ve done nothing for days, but god, I’m still so tired.”

“Yeah, I won’t be far out of bed tonight, I don’t think,” Gideon replied.

“If Benson wakes during the night,” Toby said, “I’ll get up with him. You have to go into work tomorrow. Driving, walking, sitting in an office.” Toby made a face. “You need more sleep than me. I can spend most of my day in this very spot tomorrow. Might brave the park if the weather’s okay. Not sure if the sun will fix me or kill me, but I think Benson needs more than just a walk around the backyard. I’ll see how I’m feeling tomorrow. I didn’t sleep too well last night.”

“Me either,” Gideon said. “Maybe we slept ourselves out.”

Toby agreed. “I still don’t know what the hell happened to Friday. Feels like there’s a glitch in the matrix or we crossed the Date Line or something. We missed a whole day.”

Gideon chuckled. “Having a cuddle buddy to sleep with, right? Best sleep ever.”

“Oh my god, I know, right?” Toby thought it was a bit weird that Gideon was bringing it up, considering he’d baulked in the hall the night before when Toby had mentioned it. Toby guessed Gideon was more comfortable now he’d had a whole day to think about it. “I’ve always been that way, though. Sleep better with someone beside me, that is. And just sleeping. No funny business.”

The corner of Gideon’s lip curved upward. “Same.”

They were both quiet for a bit, Toby pretending to watch TV while his mind scrambled for something to say . . . but Gideon beat him to it.

“Can we talk about that?” he asked. “About what happened. Not that anything happened, but I just feel we should talk about the fact you slept in my bed.
