Rhetorical Questions

Rhetorical questions are not really questions at all, but rather statements posed in question form that are either a summary of what another person has just said, or a comment on what that person has said, stated in a way so as to bring attention to it. For example, when I am speaking to a camper who seems uninterested in what I am saying about doing their part in cleaning up a cabin or tent, when I see them being aloof, I might say something like, “So are you telling me that if I ask you in a really respectful way to help clean up, are you telling me you are going to refuse me?” The rhetorical question is designed to frame the issue in another light. It is a statement, in some ways, not really a question.

Rhetorical questions can have great impact, but they require great skill, judgment, and good timing! Rhetorical questions can come across as sarcastic or judgmental if they are not timed or stated carefully. “So are you telling me that even though what you are doing hasn’t been working for you, you are still doing it?” The question is not really a question, but is formulated that way to cause the other person to pause and realize what others see as obvious.

Rhetorical questions are rarely used in an interview because our mission in an interview is to assess a person’s history and experience, not make a judgment about it. Rhetorical questions can be used with great effect in supervising other people’s performance if they are crafted properly.
