CHAPTER SEVEN

MADDIE AWOKE SLOWLY that next morning. She felt more safe and content than she could ever recall. It was the novelty of those feelings that stirred her and brought her closer to wakefulness. She lingered in the haze, reveling in the sweet, rare emotions from some dream she must have had.

She snuggled deeper to cling to the warm feeling. That was the moment she realized where she was and what she was doing. Her cheek was pillowed on Linc’s chest.

The small shock brought her fully awake and she jerked her head up. She was lying on her side facing him, but her left arm and leg were draped so far across his big body that she was practically lying on top of him. His left arm was wrapped around her and the fingers of his right hand loosely circled her left wrist.

When had this happened! She’d slept in the same blanket with Linc the first night, and as far as she knew, she’d never touched him, never turned toward him.

After their kiss last night, she’d planned to be cool and aloof with him this morning. But this was about as far from cool and aloof as it was possible to get short of complete intimacy. If he woke up now, it would be impossible to explain. She couldn’t explain it to herself! She had to get off him.

Maddie watched his face closely, searching for any sign he might awaken. She started to pull her wrist from his loose grip, but the moment she did, his dark eyes opened and fixed on her rounded gaze.

She felt her cheeks go hot. Linc’s wonderfully male mouth eased into an amused line, and Maddie scrambled to keep him from coming to the obvious conclusion.

“How dare you?” Her voice was husky from sleep, but the feminine growl was as close to genuine as she could make it. Indignation was a dandy distraction from what he must be thinking.

She tried to jerk her hand away, but Linc’s fingers tightened instantly, as if he’d been expecting it. She tried to pull her leg off him, but it had somehow got caught in the blanket. All she could do was shift her right arm and get it under her to demonstrate her intention to move away. Linc thwarted that by flexing his arm to keep her close.

“Don’t play the outraged virgin, Miz Maddie,” he drawled.

Especialty after last night. He hadn’t said the words, but her brain filled in the blanks.

“What a colossal ego you must have,” she tried next.

“Just keepin’ you honest.”

Mortified, Maddie tried to jerk out of his grip. He hesitated, then released her. In her haste to free her leg, she managed to tangle it tighter. Linc finally reached beneath the blanket, took hold of her thigh with breathtaking familiarity, and pulled her free. Maddie made a thoroughly awkward getaway and ended up on her hands and knees in the grass. Disgruntled, she faced forward to get up.

And came nose to nose with a small hairy face.
