And that was precisely why he wasn’t going to do anything about it.

Something had changed between them, some indefinable twist to the dynamic that was both unnerving and exciting. He liked her. Respected her. Wanted her. They were no longer master and apprentice; instead of opponents, they were suddenly a team.

Nic forced his feet to continue down the stairs. He needed her frustrated. Needed her alert and on edge for the job. But bloody hell, it was torture.

He settled himself in the taproom and was immediately pounced on by two eager serving women. The blond one with dimples bent low over the table under the pretense of wiping up and gave him an eyeful of her ample bosom. She was a ripe, rounded, fleshy handful, but she smelled of stale beer and cloying perfume. The brunette was skinnier, with a thin, pretty face, but Nic felt his desire slipping away.

What the hell was wrong with him? He was thirty-five, not some callow youth of eighteen. He shouldn’t be lusting after a prickly little virgin.

But all he could see was the curve of Marianne’s back as she rose from the tub. The two indentations at the top of her buttocks as they pooled with droplets of water. The shape of her waist, just crying out for his hands.

Bloody hell.

He stared moodily into his wine. He wanted to trace those droplets with his tongue. Wanted to lap them off her, inch by inch, down between her legs, until she wrapped them around him. He wanted to sink into her sweet, lithe acrobat’s body and screw her until they couldn’t remember their own names. Maybe then he’d get her out of his system.
