Chapter Nine
Inside the compound the guards continued to make their rounds. Human and nonhuman, paired together, walked the perimeter expecting an attack at any minute. These foot soldiers seemed to not notice the difference between them. They joked softly or smoked, just doing the same things that bored guards did anywhere in the world. In the tunnels of the complex there were more guards, but these were more alert. The closer to the chamber that held the goddess and Destiny the more nonhumans there were.
Damound sat on the throne he had created from the air. Magic moved slower in this world than it did in his realm, but there was a great repository of it waiting to be tapped. With so few magic users living on this Earth, he found it ridiculously easy to manipulate it, and not just the magic. The men of this place were children. Give them a shiny toy and they were yours for life. Marcus was an easy example of the creatures. While the human thought he held his desire to damage the girl secret, Damound easily saw it. It fed him in ways that the human did not understand.
The darker emotions that were rampant in humans were like fine caviar to the demon. Pain, anger, lust and despair filled him almost to bursting. He could still taste the despair he had siphoned off the girl. She was a rich source of energy and he planned on keeping her that way for as long as he could.
Most humans were drained so quickly. A simple sip or two and their little hearts burst, but her mixed bloodlines had made for a much stronger and resilient creature. Why the taste of fear as he used her had fed him better than all the humans he had consumed in the past month. He was full and by consequence he was lethargic. Full fed for the first time since he had been re-summoned into this world, he stretched out in the throne.
Another session like he had enjoyed the night before would fill him to the point he just might be able to discard the vessel that held him here. His slit-pupil eyes darted over to the face of his vessel. How ironic it was that the boy had been in the spot and not Marcus. The so-called leader of Strife had planned on tying his own essence to the Demon Lord he summoned, expecting both to receive unlimited power, and to become immortal. Marcus did not know that being the vessel was a short-term contract. No human lasted more than a few days, a week at most, in the role of a demon vessel. It was only those with other than human blood who had a chance of becoming immortal, a slim and never realized chance, but still a chance. The boy who was his current vessel was not fully human and had granted him a longer than normal time.
Damound had mere hours left to get that gate open before the magic holding him connected to the vessel would burn it out.
