Seven

ANYA MOORE

Iwas sweating bullets. I had been avoiding this day since Kieran put them out of my hospital room. My parents and Kieran’s parents were coming over tonight for dinner. I had not spoken to my mother or father since the incident. My mother called nonstop; however, mentally, I didn’t think I could’ve handled dealing with her critique during my healing process. But I knew I could no longer avoid her.

I sat on the edge of my bed, fully dressed, watching the clock. Our families should arrive in twenty minutes, and I felt a headache forming.

There was a knock at the door that pulled me from my thoughts. A smile formed on my face when I heard the deep baritone on the other side of the door.

“A, can I come in?”

I sucked my teeth. “Kieran, stop being weird.”

The door opened, and he had a silly grin on his face. I couldn’t help but laugh. He was showing his goofy side, which I adored so much.

“Why are you knocking, Kieran?”

He moved toward me and placed a kiss on my forehead. “I don’t know… Habit, I guess.”

“Well, break it, please,” I said.

Since the night Kieran had me losing all control just from him pleasing me with his fingers, we’d slept in my bed together every night but nothing had happened since that night. He would come in from work, get ready for bed, and come lay beside me. I was always excited to hear about how his day went, and he was excited to hear about my progress, too. We would spend nights talking about random things and then fall asleep in each other’s arms. It had become the new norm for us.

“How you feeling?” he asked.

“Nervous, sick on the stomach, annoyed, and wishing I had a new set of parents. Do we really have to do this?” I whined. “I’ve been in such a good headspace that I don’t think I can handle my mother right now.”

“At the end of the day, they’re your parents, and they care about you, Anya. They’ve been calling nonstop. Your mother even threatened to send the police over for a wellness check. At least get through the dinner tonight.”

“Ugh!” I fell back on the bed.

“Stop being a baby; you’ll be fine. It’ll be over before you know it. Come on. Let me help you up.” He went and grabbed the wheelchair to push me to the dining room area. The aroma of the catered food hit my nose, and my stomach growled.

“Somebody hungry, ain’t it?” Kieran teased.

“I am! I haven’t eaten since lunch.”

“We’ll probably eat as soon as they get here to make this go by faster. I am going to put your crutches near you, so when you feel the need to use them, use them. But don’t overdo it.”

I rolled my eyes at Kieran’s protectiveness. It was cute but could be a little much at times. Kieran didn’t trust me with my crutches after I almost lost my balance the other day, heading to the bathroom.
