Sam flipped through the pages of the spell book until she landed on the spell they needed to lead them to the compass.

“Okay,” she murmured, scanning the page for the list of ingredients. “Found it.”

“Great,” Hale said, keeping his eyes on the road. The two of them were in the truck, driving back to town. “What do we need? We can pick it up on our way back.”

Sam brushed her hair back, off her face, looking down at the book. “We need thyme, mint, sea salt, and…” she paused, stumbling on the word.

“What?” Hale said, quickly glancing at Sam. “What’s the last ingredient?”

“Siren’s blood,” Sam murmured. She cleared her throat. “The last ingredient is siren’s blood.”

Hale’s body tensed. “Oh.”

“Yeah,” Sam mumbled, taking a closer look at the page. “But we only need a few drops.”

“Okay.” Hale’s shoulders loosened. “Let’s just focus on getting the other ingredients first.”

Sam nodded. “We should be able to find this stuff at the grocery store pretty easily.”

“Yeah,” Hale agreed.

It wasn’t much longer before Hale turned into the parking lot outside of Perry’s Market. Sam swung open the door and lowered herself out of the truck, clutching the spell book close to her chest. She sure as hell wasn’t going to leave it in there just in case there were hunters around who knew what it was and wanted it for themselves. With the week she had, who knew what more could happen. Either way, Sam wasn’t taking any chances.

“Good call,” he said over his shoulder. “Taking the book with us.”

“I’d rather be safe than sorry,” Sam said, following him into the store.

The ingredients—minus the siren’s blood, obviously—weren’t hard to find, and after checking with the book to make sure they’d gotten the right amount of everything they needed, they headed out.

“Your car is still at school, right?” Hale asked Sam, putting the bags in the truck.

“Yeah,” she replied. “And I live on campus, anyway.”

“Okay,” Hale said, turning his key in the ignition. “I’ll drop you off there.”

Sam tucked her hair behind her ear, batting her eyelashes. “Thanks.”

“No problem,” Hale said awkwardly.

Deflated, Sam turned her attention to the road. Weird—Hale seemed immune to her charms.

The car ride back to Harbor View was the quickest it had ever been. Sam was shocked to see the academic buildings pop up as Hale maneuvered the vehicle with the ease of a professional. Following her instructions, he pulled in front of her residence hall and slowly rolled to a stop.

“Thanks,” Sam said and turned to him, the movement of her head making her hair sway.

“You’re welcome,” Hale replied.

Sam opened the door and swung her legs out, poised to leave.

“Wait a minute,” Hale said, pulling out his phone and handing it to her. “Put your number in.”

Sam’s stomach dropped, adrenaline pulsing in her veins.

Oh. My. God. Was he already asking for her number?

Quickly he added, noticing the look on her face, “So I can reach you if I need to.”

“Oh, right,” Sam replied, her face hot with embarrassment. Maybe she’d jumped the gun a little.
