“We couldn’t believe you took the plunge, man.” Ramon winked before presenting two champagne flutes full of bubbling liquid.

Meg accepted the glass, although she didn’t drink. Then she recognized the scent of sparkling juice.

His friends had come and so had hers in celebration of what should be a happy event.

“Meg was mean and made me marry her.” Jared winked and everyone laughed, recognizing the joke for what it was. “Seriously, I consider myself privileged to have such a beautiful and amazing wife. I’m surprised she would agree to have me.”

Sincere respect. The power of it touched her like nothing else could. Already this marriage was different. Eddie had hated her work, and found fault with her at every turn.

Jared was not a man who would ever intentionally hurt her. She couldn’t begin to measure the relief as it lifted from her spirit like the bubbles in the glass. This wasn’t the evening she’d planned to spend with him. As their wedding ceremony had been, their wedding night may as well be a practical one, too.

But as her friends and Jared’s friends led them into the house, she realized this was fine, too. The dining room table was set with her best china and lace cloths. The silver candelabra was loaded with lit, pastel candles that glowed with warmth. The warm scents filled the air of Southern cooking—rich gravy and baked beans, ribs, chicken-fried chicken, mashed potatoes, butter beans and sweet potato pie.

Gifts were gaily wrapped and stacked on the top of the buffet.

As the doorbell rang and the rest of Jared’s Bible Study members arrived with desserts and gifts and good wishes and invitations for her to join them at their next meeting.

“Is this better than what we had planned?” Jared pulled her aside and leaned close to ask her.

“It is. This is your home now, too, and all this, seeing both sets of our friends here, makes it official. “

“Yes. This is our home.” He put his arm around her.

The way any friend would do to another in a moment of emotional closeness. At least that’s what Meg told herself. So, why did his nearness make her remember his tender kiss?

“The newlyweds dish up first.” Pilar took charge, heading toward the kitchen. “We’ll do food, then presents, then dessert.”

“After you, my wife.” As gallant as a knight of old, Jared put her first. He carried her plate and made sure she had dished up enough food. He held her chair for her. He didn’t take his sparkling eyes off her.

He was man enough to make even a woman like her hope that this convenient marriage could be a happy one.
