Chapter Fourteen

Dorothy

Dorothy stood in the center of a silver garden. A rocky circular path enveloped her, blooming tall with flowers of the same sparkling sheen. This world was completely gray. From behind a looming tree of iron came a shadow, a cloaked figure. He removed his dark hood from his head, his silver hair flapping in the wind. The purest eyes of silver she’d ever seen connected with hers. Tin.

He sauntered toward her, smiling that smile he’d worn before she’d returned to Kansas. The branch-like scars running down his cheek glistened beneath the sun and her heart sped up. He was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen.

Dorothy inched closer, closer, until his hand came to her lower lip in a soft brush.

Tin’s head leaned down to kiss her but before his mouth touched hers, his lips moved close to her ear, to where she’d felt his warm breath. “Sorry, Dorothy.”

There wasn’t enough time for her to think as he stepped back. Lion shifted out from behind a tree, nodding at Tin. Her eyes widened as Tin’s hands arched up, swinging his axe. Her feet stayed planted in the dirt of the garden, unable to move as the blade bit into her neck and sailed through, spraying the silver garden in a sea of scarlet.

Dorothy woke up screaming—screaming so terribly loud. But only in her head. Even inside there, it splintered her eardrums. She couldn’t bring her lips to part. She couldn’t move anything.

Two fingers drew her eyelids open. Her pupils took a moment to adjust to the new lighting. All Dorothy could do was watch the parts of the world above her move—the blue sky, the fluffy clouds, tops of colorful trees, and part of a fur cloak. Lion. The bastard.

How could he do this? Why would he do this? She shouldn’t have been this stupid. It was because she’d known him before, had trusted him.

“I can tell you’re awake now.” Lion’s voice boomed from above her, but she couldn’t see his face. “I can see your eyes twitching.” He adjusted her body so that his golden irises appeared in front of her. “I’m not doing this because I don’t like you, Dorothy. Although, I don’t care for you anymore, not since you left. I’m doing this for Langwidere. Your head will look much better on her body, anyway. Until we get there, I’ll tell you stories, like you used to tell me to keep me calm.”

Dorothy tried to scream again, but nothing came out.

The stories Lion started to tell her weren’t ones as she’d told him from Grimms’ Fairy Tales. These were stories that truly sickened her, because they were real.

“I began collecting heads for Langwidere years ago. She tested me the first time in her old home, where I was given the opportunity to decapitate a female she had tied up in another room. I completed the task, and you know what? It felt good—more than good—especially when she fucked me for the first time right afterward. It became a ritual for us.
