Chapter 10: A Theatrical Chase

I ran and jumped down all of the stairs in the entire building. How many stairs was that? Probably about a million. I do not know. I was not about to count. I would like to be able to say that I ran down all of the stairs as quickly as I could, but I am not as fit as I used to be, and I needed to take a few breaks to catch my breath.

Definitely regretting gorging on food these past couple of days.

Did this slow me down? A little. I just hoped the elevator was as slow as I was.

By the time I reached the ground floor, I was totally out of breath. I exited the stairwell and rested my hands on my knees, and put my head between my legs.

I needed water more than anything else, but I did not have time to worry about that. I looked around the lobby of the Minepire State Building, but Mr. Nefarious was nowhere to be seen.

“Hey, are you looking for a big guy in a suit with a parrot chained to his shoulder?” The receptionist asked me.

“Yeah,” I just barely gasped out in between taking deep breaths.

The receptionist rolled their eyes. “That guy just ran out of here. Bumped into me as he ran out. Didn’t even stop to apologize. Said he had a show to catch. I don’t believe that for one minute, but if you’re looking for him, I would check out the Blockway theatre district.”

Had I ever seen a show on Blockway? No.

Was I at least cultured enough to know where it was? I mean... I pretty much knew where it was. The general direction…ish.

I left the Minepire State Building and ran, as exhausted as I was, in the general direction of the theater district as far I could tell.

Even though I was almost entirely wiped out, I was still in better shape than Mr. Nefarious. He ran so slowly that I was still able to spot him, even though he was pretty far away. Penny kept pecking his head, causing him to bump into things and slow down.

That’s my girl!

As out of breath as I was, I knew I had to keep going for Penny’s sake and for the sake of the rest of the mobs that had been caged up by Mr. Nefarious.

Mr. Nefarious turned back and was surprised to see I was behind him. He gave me a spiteful look and then ran into a building to hide in. I looked at what building he went into, and it was one of the Blockway theaters.

I used as much energy as I could muster to run into a theater that I had just seen Mr. Nefarious slip into. He wasn’t going to get away that easily.

Once I got to the theater, I slipped into the same door as Mr. Nefarious. I was fully prepared to throw hands with him if that’s what I had to do in order to save Penny.
