Chapter Fifteen

I CHECKED THE TIME on my watch, again. I was doing my best not to let myself get irritated, but I was not a man who appreciated waiting. I had arrived five minutes early and got us a table in a quiet corner of the bar. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I wasn’t interested in being the star of an ugly scene and wanted a modicum of privacy. I had enough publicity at the moment. The last thing I needed to do was get into a shouting match with the father of my future wife. I hoped it didn’t come to that, but the more I sat and waited, the more I began to believe the meeting wasn’t going to be all that friendly.

I checked my watch again. Phil was ten minutes late. I had to believe it was intentional. He was making me wait for him, showing me he was the one with the power. It was a power play, one I had seen before and not one I appreciated. I closed my eyes, sipping the club soda and telling myself not to let myself get worked up by his stupid games. I could swallow my pride if it meant keeping Rose happy. I wouldn’t let him get to me. Easier said than done.

I tapped my finger on the table, looking around the bar that was relatively empty at three o’clock on a Sunday. It wasn’t a sports bar. It was more of a bar that would fill up on a Monday evening when the corporate types got off work and wanted to relax and unwind in a clean, somewhat upscale establishment without a lot of scantily clad women or young, college-aged guys looking to get laid. It was a bar for the grown-ups and had none of the stuff that would appeal to the younger crowd, which was exactly why the adults liked it, I thought with a smile.

I checked my watch again and grimaced. I could feel my body stiffening with frustration. Fifteen minutes was rude. He knew it and I knew it. He hadn’t bothered to call or text, letting me know he was running late. I was about ready to get up and leave, my pride already suffering from a huge insult when he walked through the door. I pretended not to notice him, not letting him see my irritation at being kept waiting.

“Sorry, I’m late. I was caught up with an emergency for a client,” he said, taking a seat at the table, acting as if his tardiness wasn’t a big deal.

“No problem,” I replied easily, both of us knowing it was a big problem.

“Have you been waiting long?” he asked.

It was a trick question. If I said I hadn’t, he would assume I had been late and the one to affront him. If I said I had, he won the little game. I pushed my pride aside once again, thinking of Rose’s beautiful face.

“Fifteen minutes,” I said, letting him know I had arrived on time.
