Thirteen
The young Senator McComb glanced at his watch, feeling pure hate for the balding engineer who stood in front of him. They had built the company together, he and Jack Parker, and now Jack wanted to piss it all away on this piece of hardware —
Yeah, the cryo-chip was a good idea, no argument. But their money needed to go other places, to continue with their spec work on the Chen account. Parker was talking about a big fucking investment, not a couple of new computers; it would take years to work the bugs out of something like this…
Parker kept on. “It's the future of this company, Aaron. If you don't agree, you're welcome to just — walk away.”
McComb looked around at the industrial work stations, the metal benches, the precision latches and electronic gear. To one side was the cold room, a glass enclosure, climate-controlled for experiments — this new chip, among other things.
Was this where his future lay? In this nitrogen-fed chop shop, led by Jack Parker? Perhaps not… but he wasn't going to just walk away, either.
“Come up with the money to buy me out,” he said. Parker was fucked for capital; they both knew it.
Parker scratched his thinning hair. “I can't really afford it —”
McComb started to smile. “Then what are we talking about, Jack? As long as I'm around, you aren't going to blow any more of our money.”
Parker went on, produced a thick envelope from his pocket. “I can't afford it — but I found an enterprising banker with some faith in the future.”
McComb studied Parker's set face, then reached for the offered packet, surprised.
“Take it, Aaron. You're out. You've got no faith in the company and I've got none in… politicians.” He said it as if it were a dirty word.
McComb rifled through the envelope thoughtfully. Yeah, okay — let the little man have his pipe dream. It was enough money for him to —
He frowned and looked up at the same time Parker did. There was a weird, electric humming noise that had suddenly built out of nothing.
The factory was closed. A power surge of some kind —?
The air seemed to condense, to thicken in front of them. McComb spun. Behind them, too — an arc of electric light shot through the apparition of density, followed by more. Crackles and hisses, and a heavy waft of ozone scented the room.
Oh, shit —
“What —?” started Parker.
McComb felt the icy grip of terror at his throat. The air congealed, took form —
— and suddenly two burly men just appeared, like somebody beaming down from an old sci-fi episode. The two men were heavily armed. They looked like security agents, thin-lipped and glaring, the weapons trained on McComb and Parker —
McComb was amazed, terrified; he couldn't think. More shimmer, another materialization. Two additional men stood there, one a heavyset guard, his hand bandaged, a mean smile on his rugged face. God, what was this? Some kind of hallucination? Were they gonna die —
The second man
