CHAPTER 7: FATE SHALL HAVE IT’S WAY

As she raced to hit the beltway for part of the way before hitting the long winding and forested drive to GIRP she recollected every aspect of what she overheard. Seth Dixon was telling the truth and as far as that elusive crystal in question, Carla surmised that somehow Seth had made an incision just above the skull and planted it there himself. She knew as a result of Seth’s bold decision to show her what he had been secretly harboring all along, they were now on to him; and she was their bait.

But what astounded Carla the most was Seth’s willingness to risk it all just to prove to her that he was not delusional. What about that look he gave her as if he had seen her somewhere before or if he had known her in another place and time? As much as it all began to come together for Carla, it continued to unravel.

As she drove under the late evening March sky, she knew she was embarking on a one-way trip inside the possibilities of fate, and she was now willing to relinquish to any outcome. She was to either find Seth Dixon and they both would escape and somehow, almost like a leap of faith, leave this reality behind. Or, she would be caught and soon locked up and God knows what else.

But she developed a bond with Seth Dixon somehow, part of which was due to going back in time and reliving the happier moments right before tragedy struck.

She sobbed with the thought of it. She was torn because the husband that she knew and loved was also part of a life that had grown dreary, dark, and sad. He never really seemed to understand her emptiness only consoling her with his words that their love for each other could conquer any barriers. For Carla, she wasn’t so sure anymore. She only went back to work to bury her sorrows under the cover of her dream career. The accident, however; had taken her most treasured dream away from her. The thought and reality of never bearing children took a piece of her soul hostage that she knew would never be returned no matter how high the ransom.

Time was running out. Whatever it was that she experienced, she’d only have a day and half before Seth would disappear off the grid forever.

The Arrival at GIRP

Carla had no problems getting access to just about every common area of the facilities. As long as it was a common area with adequate supervision, governmental personnel could visit any ward. As she approached the front lobby, she followed protocol. She displayed her badge, checked in at the front desk to write down a time in, and noted her whereabouts. She is heading to the 4th ward.

The operator at the front desk took the clipboard and kindly said,

“You’re just in time; the patients are out in the court yards for some fresh air and board games.
