Chapter Fourteen

As we stepped out onto the road again, Nora said, “We could cover more ground if we split up.”

I opened my mouth to reply, but nothing came out. I wanted so badly to say I wasn’t ready for that, but I also didn’t want to disappoint her. The words got stuck in my throat at the crossroad of those two feelings.

“Ah,” she said. “Yeah, you’re probably right. That’s a lot to ask of someone on their first day in Eastwind. We’ll get there eventually, but not today. Let’s head back to Erin Park. It’s the closest of the places we need to go, and we can talk to Timothy about his carrots.”

I felt the panic subside, and I gladly agreed and strolled up the cobblestone street alongside her.

A ten-minute walk later, as we passed through one of the quaintest neighborhoods I’d ever seen, with small stone cottages, aged wooden gates, and lush gardens, Nora said, “There he is.”

I spotted the faun in the front yard of his small cottage. He was stomping through his wild green lawn and fussing with a large patch of dirt in the center of it. I realized, as we drew closer, that it was not a dirt patch, but a raised garden bed.

“Timothy,” Nora called out. “How’s your day?”

He straightened from where he was leaning over, his curly hair in a sweaty tangle, despite the cool weather. When his eyes landed on Nora, he shot out a hand. “Stop right where you are! Come no closer! My poor plot has experienced enough death this season.”

Nora rolled her eyes. “Timo—”

“Nope! I won’t hear it. I’m not blaming you for who you are, but now’s not the time. I’m only just refreshing the soil. It’s practically ashes. A dark entity got ahold of it, and now—”

“That’s what we’re here about,” Nora persisted, hollering from where we stood in the street at the edge of his yard.

“Acting on behalf of a dark entity now? I didn’t think you had it in you.”

Nora grumbled something under her breath. “I’m here because someone was murdered.”

“Obviously! Angel of death, you are! That’s what I’m saying. Nothing personal, but please stay well away from my soil. You and your friend. Who is she anyway?”

But before Nora could respond, he answered his own question. “Plague, no doubt. Plague and Death walking up the road through Erin Park. Wouldn’t be the strangest thing I’ve seen.”

Nora and I exchanged a look. Her eyes told me to be patient.

As if I had anything else to do. I had nowhere to be. I could stand here and let the faun call me names all day.

“I need to talk to you about Sasha Cosmo,” she said.

“Don’t you speak her name ‘round here! She’s the reason I’m starting my garden over in the winter. It’s her fault.”

“I know, she told us all about it.”

“Then why are you bothering me? Go talk to that husband of yours and tell him to do something about it. She assaulted my carrots!”

Nora leaned toward me, muttering, “Assaulting carrots isn’t a charge here, don’t worry.
