The two teams continued working their way to the bottom of the debris pile blocking the cave entrance. Mid-morning Hawk called out, “Blackened stones. We’ve got a fire pit.”

The top layer of rocks scorched and darkened with soot lay exposed in the debris. At that point further digging stopped. It took the next three days to sift through all of the overburden so as not to discard anything of value. But in the end it paid off with a wealth of carbon residue and numerous ground squirrel bones apparently thrown into the fire after being picked clean of roasted meat.
