Chris had the idea to make a machine to magnify the abilities of the stone, so I did. I built the machine again, but as I stared at the huge machine in the lab, I thought I should make a machine in the form of an everyday household piece of furniture. If, heaven forbid, someone came looking for the stone or the machine, they would never find it. No one will ever find the stone; I’m positive about that. Even if they did, it would be useless to them. That was an accident.

One day, before I married Carolyn, I was examining the stone. I was trying to discover what it was made of. I also wanted to know if it could be damaged. I was careless, only looking at the stone, when I slipped with the instrument and made a huge gash against my palm. Instinctively I grabbed my hand but pushed more blood from the cut. The instant my blood touched the rock, I felt it. I felt it all the way to my bones. The stone looked the same. Black, insignificant, and ordinary. Oh, but it called to me. Maybe more now that it’s mine.
