COVID-19 is caused by a virus of the family Coronaviridae. The medicines effective against viral diseases are called antivirals. There is currently no licensed medication, that is, antiviral to cure COVID-19. There is no proven antiviral against any of the viruses in the corona family. Antibiotics do not work against viruses (as the name suggests, these are effective against bacteria). For a COVID-19 infection, antibiotics are not recommended. However, a proportion of people affected with COVID-19 may also develop a secondary bacterial infection as a complication. In those cases, antibiotics may be prescribed by the treating physician. In any case, irrespective of the disease condition, antibiotics should be taken only on the prescription of a qualified provider.
