Chapter Twelve

The following week I learned that Tiffany had been asked to meet with Janson again. Janson, the muscular bald-headed black male model she had done a picture shoot with way back. I knew those two had chemistry.

How did he get his information? I wondered. It seemed he was not shy at all and had gotten into swinging himself lately. He wanted to meet Tiffany alone.

With this one request, everything in our marriage started to change.

That Friday morning we sat and talked it all over.

“I thought we agreed to do these meet-ups together,” I said. I knew deep inside that she was unusually attracted to Janson. He was young, handsome, perfectly built and capable of giving her all I could not in the bedroom. The fact that he had charm and charisma made the idea of a private get-together even more unacceptable. “Why are we changing the rules now?” I said.

Tiffany had an answer. “We said we would do most things together, but at times we could separate. Nothing has changed. We need the extra money,” she added.

I was tempted to start a big fight right then and there, but I held back, even knowing I was right to speak my peace. Late that afternoon, as I pretended to watch a baseball game, I wondered which outfit she would choose.

She went for classy yet sexy. Her skirt was gray, with a large belt buckle. It was a pencil skirt, semi-long but tight as hell. Her top was a white halter, and her breasts bulged out of it. She topped it off with white pearls, a gold Gucci watch and strappy gray high heels. She had recently had more highlights applied to her hair, so her natural sandy, beachy look had been disguised under lighter blond streaks. Long bangs covered her face and fell past her eyes.

I tried not to sound upset. “So, what’s the plan?” I said.

She smiled and said, “Drinks at a hotel bar. He has a room in the same place.” She kissed me and was out the door, never looking back.

While she was gone, I imagined the worst. They would hit it off too well. She would ask for a divorce, and my life would be hell. I would be alone. A cripple. How could all this have happened to me?

I had no choice but to go along with everything she wanted. What else could I do?

I watched two movies and drank a bottle of wine, but visions of my wife and her bald headed black lover never left my thoughts.

At about eleven or so she called. She was on her way home already. I was surprised. I had to ask, “What happened?”

“Not all that much,” she said.

I was like, what the fuck? “Something must have happened,” I said.

“Here’s how it went, James,” she began. “We hooked up for some drinks and chatted for like an hour. He was charming and funny and we laughed and laughed. He got into ESE for the fun of it.
