Thyra never even saw her coming. When the wave dragged her under, she became tied in with some ropes and bits of sail that were still attached to the boat. She reached for the knife on her belt to cut herself free, but she had lost it. Her sword was gone, too. She struggled against the heavy weight of the rope but realised with a growing sense of desperation that it was futile. She was fast running out of air, and everything suddenly started to hurt. Her chest, her throat, and the inside of her lungs. She screamed underwater and pushed against the debris that kept her down and sinking deeper now. She swallowed some water, and her body spasmed. She tried to angle her face toward the surface. Everything was turning black. It hurts. Nothing in the entire world had ever felt so painful to her, not even when Bjarke had used his whip to slice through the flesh across her back. In retrospect, that had been nothing. This was a hell of a lot worse. Thyra had never experienced such intense torment as when the entire sea tried to force itself inside her body and into her lungs. She fought hard for her life. She sure did not go easy. But then, suddenly, it all became extremely quiet inside her mind, and the pain disappeared. In a flash of dazzling white light through the water, Thyra spotted her lover, standing watching her in the distance.

“Kari!”

All at once, the water was gone and she was back in the mountains once more. It did not even feel a little bit strange. Thyra instantly recognised the lake. The air was full of a sweet fragrance, and vibrantly clear. It was warm in the sunshine, and it made perfect sense to be there. Up ahead, Kari’s face broke into a brilliant smile.

“Thyra,” she called. “What are you doing here? Come to me, my love.”

At the exact same time that Thyra fell into her lover’s arms, Merit caught up with her unconscious friend. She used the sharp knife that she had picked up from a dead sailor’s chest earlier and started slicing through the ropes that were tangled around Thyra’s legs. She had no idea of what was going on in her world at that particular moment. All she knew was that she had to cut her loose.

“I have to go soon,” Kari said gently.

Her embrace felt strong, safe, and just like pure oxygen to Thyra. Right there in Kari’s arms was where she desperately wanted to stay. With Kari was the only way that she could even think of wanting to exist in this world.

“Go where?” she exclaimed. “I’ll come with you.”

Over the glittering-blue waters of the highland lake, past the mountain peaks that Thyra loved so much, the light was getting brighter, shifting and changing in the wind. It was now calling for its Shining One to return home. It was time.

“Listen to me, baby,” Kari whispered. “Look at me, Thyr.”

Thyra pulled back just a little bit to be able to gaze into her lover’s deep green eyes.
